Start Fresh — Springtime Tips to Simplify Your Life

Small steps

Start fresh with small steps.

You can start fresh anytime.

Indeed, new beginnings are available in each and every moment.

And the transition from winter into spring offers an especially fortuitous moment to start thinking about this.

Though it’s still early, have you noticed? The days feel different now. Light fills our evenings and the snow is melting away during this expansive time of year.

Start Fresh in Spring

And spring is truly the epitome of a new beginning.  Birds return from their winter homes, buds burst open, and gardens get planted.

Part of making a new beginning involves clearing away the old. Winter’s detritus needs to be moved out of the way as you start fresh. And that’s a task that can easily be neglected when life is busy.

However, it’s also a task that only builds up and gets more difficult as time goes on.

Why?

Whenever you go through a transition, if you don’t address the old, as well as the new, you’ll be adding to the clutter in your life. This can be either mental clutter or the kind of clutter that you can trip over as you cross your bedroom.

Either way, clutter is going to impede your efforts to start fresh and move forward in your life.  You may think that leaving it saves you time, but in the long run, it doesn’t.

2 Tips to help you start fresh:

Here are two ideas that will help you clear up old clutter as you move through any transition:

Ready Donation Box
Keep a donation box or bag somewhere handy. Any time you see something you don’t love or use, add it to the box. Soon downsizing will be a habit.

If you change your mind about something, it’s still there in the box, so you don’t need to be worried about ‘losing’ something valuable. And periodically follow through on making your donation(s) so you really do move things along.

Don’t Bring in the Mail
Open snail mail right beside your recycle bin. Recycle everything except for those items you need to deal with, and take action on what you keep as soon as you can.

Do you have rituals that help you transition from the old to the new?  How do you let go and avoid clutter as you move through your days? What will you do today, to let go of something old and move toward something new?
