Time leaks are nothing to fool with.
Time leaks are the downfall of many smart, energetic solopreneurs and small business owners.
And in many ways, it’s the small time leaks that are hardest to recognize and counter.
Take Facebook and Twitter, for example. How many times have you said to yourself, “I’ll just take a moment …” only to later find that you’ve ‘lost’ hours exploring one or the other of those social networks?
But you can’t avoid them entirely — especially if you run an internet-based business.
Time Leaks and Boundaries
So that’s where your boundaries come in. Setting a clear time boundary before you click the link and open Twitter or Facebook allows you to do what you need to there AND stick to your time plan.
The best way to set a maintain a boundary and prevent time leaks in these venues is to use a timer. It’s a very clear-cut process:
- Decide how much time you’ll spend;
- Set your timer; and
- Stop when the timer goes off.
Following through and respecting your plan is key. If you don’t stop when you say you will, you undermine self-trust, as well as losing precious time.
