Time-Off and Time-On — Give Yourself What You Need

Nourish yourself with time-off…

Time-off is crucial to your well-being.  Yet it’s often near the bottom of your list of priorities.

Am I right?

So, here’s the thing.

If you want to be as productive as possible, time boundaries are a key tool.  And it’s one that you usually think about using when focus and concentration are necessary for completing a task.

But time boundaries are vital, not just for your efficiency and effectiveness, they are fundamentally important for your well-being, too.

Time-Off and Time-On:

Time off is when you are completely away from your tasks and to-do lists.

Time on is when you are engaged in the tasks that you’ve set for yourself.

Setting boundaries that recognize these two categories of time helps you support yourself and find time success.

Boundaries:

There are challenges inherent in giving yourself the space and time you need.  In fact, this may be the place where your time boundaries are most challenging (and challenged).

For example, to truly give yourself a break, have you ever tried to step away from your technology for a week?  A day?  Even a few hours?  You may need to think about doing this to truly give yourself some real time off. And if you’ve tried, you may have discovered that it isn’t easy.

I recently set a time boundary and stepped away from my desk to go for a long walk. I was overjoyed that the rain had (briefly) stopped here in New Hampshire.

There I was, breathing the clear, dry air. No phones or tablets or laptops. No reading material or to-do list.  Just me and the sun and the birdsong.

It was an incredibly refreshing walk as I let my mind relax and wander along with my body.

And you know what?  When I returned to my desk I had renewed energy and several creative ideas.

Create space for yourself…

And then look what happens. That energy and those ideas I had didn’t come from nowhere. They had been percolating in my subconscious for a long time.

Setting my time boundaries to give myself some time off gave me a different kind of uncluttered mental space.  And in that space, creative new ideas had the opportunity to pop up and make themselves visible.

So, do you really give yourself the gift of this kind of space and time?  How might you try it, starting today? See what kinds of gifts emerge.
