Your time cushion keeps you agile.

If you’re someone who sews, I know you’ve heard of a pin cushion.

But have you ever heard of a time cushion?

Creating a time cushion for yourself is a powerful tool for reducing stress.

How?

Well, working ahead and creating a time cushion is your key to managing your time. This is especially true when you’re under pressure. And your time cushion becomes even more useful and important when unexpected events throw you off track.

Why?

Here’s how a time cushion helps…

Finding time to manage all of your tasks is a bigger-than-usual challenge when the unexpected hits.

I learned this lesson in a very concrete and personal way when I broke my leg back in early December. It offered an excellent example of the “unexpected.” And having a time cushion proved extremely important as I navigated through those days.

You can’t always know the challenging situations that may confront you, but it’s a very good idea to expect the unexpected and to build in some time for it in your life.  How, you ask?

Working ahead is your key…

One of the best tools that I have found is to work ahead when I have the time.  It’s similar to saving up for a rainy day.  Your time cushion is like a savings account.  You fall back on it when your time, energy, and focus must be applied to the unexpected, rather than your usual tasks.

Aside from providing you with the ability to have a quick and agile response to any situation, your time cushion also reduces your stress level.  Working ahead, whenever you can, is a wise time choice, a surefire stress-reducer, and an excellent energy investment.

Here’s an example…

Generally, I like to plot out my blog posts ahead of time. And I write them in “chunks” whenever possible.

This practice is known as “batching.” It’s a very efficient use of time because it contributes to focus and enhances efficiency and productivity.

And it was especially helpful back in December, in the early days of my healing. I knew that I already had a collection of blog posts ready to go. That left me with some flexibility to deal with my recovery.

Are there special ways that you have found to make sure that you have room to maneuver when the unexpected hits?  I’d love to hear.
