Your Excellent Effort Beats Perfectionism Any Day

Your excellent effort is better than perfect.

Your excellent effort is worth striving for, always.

It nets results that you can be proud of, always.

Yet all too often, we ignore an excellent effort while we stubbornly pursue what we think of as perfection.

The perfect is held up as the highest ideal. But perfection is just that, an ideal.  It has nothing to do with reality.

And, as Harriet Braiker has so well expressed:

Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing.

Your excellent effort vs. perfectionism:

Excellence is always evolving and changing. You attain one level of excellence and then strive for the next.  Each moment offers new opportunities for excellence.

Perfection, on the other hand, is where you stop. What could follow? There is something about perfection that is, at its core, contrary to the human condition.

We humans are ever-changing and evolving, too. Excellence is always possible, but perfection is problematic because it represents a kind of completion that leaves no place for further change.  It’s hard to even conceive of such a thing. And it’s hard to imagine striving to attain such a thing.

From the standpoint of energy and motivation…

When you’re making an excellent effort it’s like you’re working away on your project with a marching band and cheerleaders on the sidelines. They are all rooting for you to do your best. This means that your creative energies are freed up and you’re much more likely to attain the excellence you seek.

Striving for perfection, on the other hand, is like working long hours alone, in a sparsely furnished room.  Your only company is your inner critic, who sits on your shoulder, looking for mistakes and correcting you at every step along the way.  Your energies are cramped and you will ultimately feel thwarted and discouraged. Perfection remains elusive and your inner critic berates you for your failings.

So, what do you strive for? Do you have cheerleaders or critics in your inner world as you work toward your goals?

What changes would you like to make, starting today?
