Your Legacy is Complex and It isn’t Just About Money

Covey Quote-Your Legacy
Uncovering your legacy is important.

Your legacy — what you’ve inherited from those who came before — certainly isn’t just about money or property. And, because they are so embedded in your reality, some elements your legacy can be hard to see.

No, your legacy is also about messages — lessons about life and living that are handed down from generation to generation.

Your legacy includes the childhood roots of your current relationship with time. And uncovering your legacy as it relates to time is enlightening and empowering. Then you are in a position to make conscious choices about what lessons to keep and what to let go of.

This is so freeing for you.

Your legacy and your time.

There may be any number of ways that you adopted an approach to time that you learned long ago and that now works against you.  But your parents’ and grandparents’ time priorities don’t have to be your destiny.

So, today I invite you to explore just how you may have come to live someone else’s priorities.  When you start by seeing your history with clarity and compassion, you accept where you are.  This, in turn, gives you a solid base, as you then make choices to change that and transform your relationship with time.

As a child, you were inevitably and profoundly influenced by your family’s time choices. You absorbed important messages about values. Basically, you came away with lessons about what’s important and what isn’t.

Now, some questions…

Take a minute or two, right now, to recall those early, formative years.

  • How did each adult in your household spend time?

Create a vivid picture in your mind of how they lived out their priorities, day after day. Get a sense of the fundamental and personal beliefs that guided their choices.  Let the picture take shape and fill itself out.

Next, quickly jot down a few observations about their use of time.

  • What came first for each person?
  • What came last?
  • And what message does this give you about their values?
  • How do your values, now, align with theirs?

Transforming your legacy.

Your answers to these questions provide you with a good starting point for exploring your current time choices.  You may want to revisit this exercise to flesh out more and more details over time.

As you explore, you’ll illuminate patterns, some of which are helpful and some of which you may want to change.  When it comes to time, this is your legacy.

Clarifying the elements of your time legacy gives you a powerful key to transforming your relationship with time.
