Where do you stand with your New Year’s Resolutions?

How are you doing with your New Year’s Resolutions?

Or maybe I should back up a step: Did you make resolutions this New Year?  Is it a process that you find useful? Fun? Discouraging?

One thing we can probably all agree on is that New Year’s Resolutions are a mixed bag. They offer an opportunity to reflect and set goals. But more often than not, right around this time of year, many of us begin to part ways with our resolutions.

New Year’s Resolutions – Falling Off Track

Often, when we set these annual goals for ourselves we aren’t very realistic. We enjoy picturing ourselves following through on lofty aspirations.  Why not?

The thing is that while something like going to the gym every day may look doable to you on January 1, by January 14th or 15th, everyday life has intruded. You’ve missed workouts or forced yourself to go, then resented the activity.

This is a surefire recipe for dropping your New Year’s Resolutions long before January is over.

New Year’s Resolutions – Staying On Track

One of the keys to following through on your resolve, whatever it may be, is to make it doable.  Small is good.  Small spells steady success. And when you feel successful, you’ll keep doing what you’re doing.

Another key is flexibility. If you miss a day at the gym, that isn’t the end of the world and needn’t mark the end of your resolve. Go to the gym the next time you can. More is better, but anything is good!

And be creative. Your feelings about your New Year’s Resolution are going to shift and change as the days come and go. Some days you’ll love it; other days it will feel boring, bothersome, you name it. Don’t let shifting feelings knock you off track. Think of them as changing winds. Adjust your sails, but don’t stop sailing!
