Your Small Steps Are Your Key to Living Well

small steps

Your small steps get you there…

Your small steps get you from where you are to where you’d like to be.

And there’s really no other way to get there.

But so very often, we are impatient and want change to come more quickly.

Have you felt that way?

You can see where you want to be, and you aren’t satisfied with your small steps.

And that’s when you’re most likely to trip yourself up, quite literally, often losing the ground you had gained.

Your Small Steps — See Them Reflected Everywhere

I was thinking about this yesterday evening as I worked at my desk and the sun went down.  Its passage was so incremental as to be invisible. Yet it clearly moved, steadily sinking lower and lower until it disappeared behind the trees at the edge of our woods. I never actually saw movement, but that sun moved, most definitely and profoundly.

I see the same movement in my gardens, as flowers grow and blossom and peaches ripen. The rose bushes brighten with beautiful, bountiful buds that open wide and then drop their petals onto the grass. And this time of year in New Hampshire, I see it as the leaves begin to turn. A few have fallen, even now.

Big changes arrive incrementally, just like your small steps.

Transform Your Time

While small steps are powerfully mirrored in nature, the good news is that we can choose them for ourselves each and every day. We can make profound changes while investing very little effort in the process.

One of the best examples I can think of is the small step of writing down one, two or three things I am grateful for every morning and every evening.

This practice, undertaken daily, creates an attitude of gratitude that powerfully transforms your experience of time.  It takes just a minute, and doing it regularly gives you a different kind of energy to carry with you throughout your day.

Your Small Steps — Get Started:

I invite you to take a moment right now and think of one small step you can take to enhance your energy and/or improve your experience of your time.  Keep it small, write it down, and before you go to bed, reflect on what you did and how you felt about it.

It might be going for a walk, meditating, cutting down on social-networking time, culling your to-do list, or taking a relaxing bath.

You decide.

You follow-through.

And you reap the benefits…
