Find Time to Explore Facebook Features: Looking at Lists

Finding time to keep up with changes and enhancements in Facebook features can be a full time (and occasionally frustrating) job.  Facebook is somewhat notorious for making changes to applications and functionalities that disrupt users and often lead to confusion and frustration.  That isn’t to say that they improvements aren’t worthwhile – but, based on what I see online, the process can be a painful one for many users.

One such recent change had to do with Facebook Lists.  Facebook announced improvements to Friend Lists in mid-September.  Here’s how the change was described on the Facebook Blog:

To make lists incredibly easy and even more useful, we’re announcing three improvements:

  • Smart lists – You’ll see smart lists that create themselves and stay up-to-date based on profile info your friends have in common with you–like your work, school, family and city.
  • Close Friends and Acquaintances lists – You can see your best friends’ photos and posts in one place, and see less from people you’re not as close to.
  • Better suggestions – You can add the right friends to your lists without a lot of effort.

Friend Lists are completely optional. If you don’t like lists, you don’t have to use them.

Jackie Cohen has contributed a very helpful post titled “How to Edit Facebook’s New Friend Lists” on her blog All Facebook, and Mashable also offers a helpful overview of this change to your Facebook features (by Ben Parr).  As he summarizes:

The changes include Smart Lists, sharing content to lists, consuming content from lists and two new lists: “Close Friends” and “Acquaintances.”

What I see it meaning, in practical terms, is that you will need to invest more time at the front end in getting your settings the way you want them; but once that is done, you will have a more personalized and satisfying Facebook experience.

This video illuminates several of the new Facebook features, including, first, how to best utilize the news feeds and (further along) the new lists features, starting at about the 7-minute mark:
